Tilapia Export Africa

In 2014, major suppliers of tilapia experienced production problems, allowing large quantities of supply to flow into the local market of the main producing countries. About 200,000 tons of tilapia (whole fish, fillets and breadcrumbs) entered the international market in the first half of 2015, a slight decrease compared to the same period in 2014.
In the first half of 2015, compared with the same period in 2014, China’s tilapia exports increased by 3%. However, frozen fish fillets and frozen tilapia exports, which accounted for the majority of the export share, fell by 2.27% and 1.97% respectively.
In contrast, China’s export of breadcrumbs tilapia increased by 23.8% during the same period, and exports were significantly higher than Cameroon and other African markets, such as Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya. The United States is China’s largest market for exporting breaded tilapia products. In the first half of 2015, it increased by 36% over the same period of the previous year. China’s exports of tilapia continued to be the highest in the United States, and US imports of Chinese tilapia increased. 6.45%, the total reached 71878 tons. Africa is the second largest market for Chinese exports of tilapia. It imported 45,352 tons in the first half of the year, with Africa’s largest markets being Zambia, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In the first half of 2015, Latin America accounted for 12.4% of China’s total tilapia exports, with Mexico being a major consumer. Recently, China’s exports of tilapia to the Islamic Republic of Iran have been increasing, reaching 5,112 tons, an increase of 17% over the same period last year.
United States
In the first half of 2015, the total import of tilapia in the United States was 111,509 tons, an increase of 9% compared with the same period in 2014. The import of fresh fish fillets remained stable, and frozen fish fillets and fully frozen tilapia did not increase by 7.6. % and 23.1% show the popularity of tilapia in the market. China’s market share of frozen tilapia is over 80%, followed by Taiwan Province of China and Indonesia. The price of premium tilapia fillets in Indonesia and Taiwan Province of China is usually 50-70% higher than that of other countries, and the average import price from China is weakened by 12.4%.
Compared with the first half of 2014, the import volume and price of fresh tilapia remained stable in 2015. The supply of fresh tilapia in the United States, mainly supplying Honduras, fell during the period, during which the volume from Colombia to imports increased significantly by 32%.
At the same time, in the first half of 2015, imports of frozen tilapia (whole fish and fillets) increased by 10.4% (3,700 tons). Compared with the downward trend in 2014, frozen tilapia imported from China increased by 29%.
Frozen fish fillets dominate the frozen category, and China maintains its position as a leading supplier, with imports rising by 7.6%. At the same time, imports from Honduras, Mexico, Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia have also increased.
EU
According to Eurostat, the tilapia market situation in 28 EU countries was weak in the first half of 2015. Compared with the same period in 14 years, imports fell by 22%, frozen fish fillets were close to 7,500 tons, and frozen tilapia was 5,812 tons. Almost all from Asian countries. China is a major supplier (68%), followed by Vietnam (17%), Indonesia (6.7%) and Thailand (5.8%), and a new supplier to this market, Myanmar.
Latin America
In the second quarter of 2015, US imports of fresh fish fillets from Guatemala and Costa Rica fell by about 60% and 30%, respectively, but the total value of Guatemala’s exports remained stable in the second quarter, while Costa Rica’s exports fell by only 1.2%. The two major producing countries also supply the local market, and the demand for this commodity is also growing.
The main exporter of fresh and frozen fish fillets in Honduras is from Central America to the United States. In the second quarter, the volume and amount of exports remained stable compared to the same period last year. The overall trend is in line with neighboring countries, and the Secretary-General of Honduras Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) said that domestic sales have increased by about 1,200 tons per year.
Asia
Data show that in the first half of 2015, more than 79,000 tons of frozen tilapia fillets were exported from Asia, with China being the main exporter. Due to the increase in domestic domestic market supply, this volume has decreased slightly compared to the same period in 2014. In addition, Asia has supplied more than 75,000 tons of fully frozen tilapia to the international market.
Taiwan Province of China is the second largest exporter after mainland China, but exports have fallen by 19.5% due to insufficient productivity and supply shortages. In addition to the main market in the United States, Taiwanese tilapia is also mainly exported to the Middle East market, and the quality of its tilapia sashimi can reach Japanese standards.
