The UK is the second largest export destination for catfish in Europe.
The catfish imported from Europe increased significantly in April this year, an increase of 80.4% from the previous month. The import volume in April was 10.4 million pounds, and the cumulative import volume in the first four months was 18.7 million pounds. This is the largest month of importing catfish in Europe in a single month since December 2016, and the import volume in December of that year was 20.6 million pounds.
The import of catfish in the United States has declined at the same rate as the wholesale price. Volume in April decreased by 44.4% from the previous month to 5.6 million pounds. Since January 2019, the volume of imports has decreased.
With the downward trend in the US market, industry insiders point out that catfish exporters are focusing on other places, and Europe is the main destination for their products. Data from this year to date show that the number of catfish imported from Europe exceeds that of the United States, a situation that has never been seen since 2015.
